The Joy Remains

Just some early morning thoughts from me to you…

“Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; He is Christ the Lord.  This will be a sign to you:  You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger…When [the shepherds] had seen Him, they spread the word…and all who heard it were amazed…”

Luke 2:11, 12 & 17, 18 (NIV)

A cold front which has already blanketed much of our nation is heading our way tonight.  Wrapping paper and ribbon once decorating presents tucked under the tree have made their way to the trash.  Decorations and lights are slowly moving toward storage closets for another year.

Christmas day has come-and-gone.

But what about the amazement and joy? (more…)

A Wonderful Moment

Just some early morning thoughts from me to you…

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night.  An Angel of the Lord appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.  But the Angel said to them, “Do not be afraid I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all people.  Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; He is Christ the Lord.  This will be a sign to you:  You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Luke 2:8-12 (NIV)

“I’m seeing Christmas through my Grandchildren in a way I haven’t seen it in years.”

Those were the words of a long-time dear friend a couple of days ago when I got him on the phone.

“It’s wonderful”, he gushed, “just wonderful.”

He knew that I would understand, with two precious Granddaughters of our own helping us to see afresh and anew the wonder of the season, when at times we have lost our own way.  A little perhaps like those shepherds two-thousand-years ago just hanging around in a field going through the motions of day-to-day living. Follow the Light

Just some early morning thoughts from me to you…

“When [the three wise men] heard the king, they departed; and behold, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, till it came and stood over where the young Child was.

When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy.  And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him.”  Matthew 2: 9-11 (NKJV)

It was one of those unexpected moments of life-changing clarity.

And once again it came from a little child last night as we were surrounded with the story of the life of Christ through the spectacular pageantry, music and narration of “The Promise of Christmas” at Exciting Idlewild Baptist Fellowship in Tampa, Florida. (more…)

A View Through the Stuff

December 8, 2008

Just some early morning thoughts from me to you…

“When [the shepherds] had seen Him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this Child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.  But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.”  Luke 2:17-18 (NIV)

I wonder what my younger Granddaughter, Ellie Kate, would have seen and said were she there on that morning so long ago-at the manger, in the stable, in the little town of Bethlehem-when the Christ Child was born?  From our last four years of personal experience with her and, in particular, this past weekend-I believe I know!   (more…)

Christmas has Come!

December 1, 2008

Just some early morning thoughts from me to you…

“What has come into being in Him was life, and the life was the light of all people.
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.”    John 1: 4, 5 (NRSV)

Christmas is here, already!  The season that is, and none too soon!

The Light that John spoke of in his Gospel is here, finally!

Hearts seem brighter, our steps seem lighter, and the perspective toward the day and days ahead seems to be more hopeful.  A sluggish economy may be impacting some of our decisions as we approach this season of gift-giving, but we can sense a change in our spirit.  Or can we? (more…)
