The Raging Rebel of Bethlehem

Just some early morning thoughts from me to you…

“For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government shall be upon His shoulder; and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”                                                                                                        Isaiah 9:6 (KJV)

The cooler temperatures marking the change of seasons have arrived.  Another rainy cold front will be moving through toward the middle of this week bringing even more wintry signs of the season.  And as the days continue to pass, it is apparent that neither rains nor falling temperatures will slow us down—for we’re on the move.  (more…)

Happy Thanksgiving–Always

Just some early morning thoughts from me to you…

“The time has come once again to proclaim a day of thanksgiving, an occasion for Americans to express gratitude to their God and their country.  In his remarks at Gettysburg, President Lincoln referred to ours as a Nation ‘under God.’…

            We can unite in gratitude for our individual freedoms and individual faiths. We can be united in gratitude for our Nation’s gracious gifts of the Most High God.”

                        President Ronald Reagan—Thanksgiving Day Proclamation,

                                               September 15, 1983

            Lynda left yesterday before I returned from Louisville.  (more…)

Their Dreams–Tread Softly

Just some early morning thoughts from me to you…

Of night and light and the half-light, I would spread the cloths under your feet:

But I, being poor, have only my dreams;

I have spread my dreams under your feet;

Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.”

William Butler Yeats (The Wind Among the Reeds 1899)

            Even though the cooler weather we are beginning to experience tends to remove a few things from her to-do list—like mowing the grass with the lawn tractor—my bride Lynda still seems to have a list of things to-do longer than she could realistically ever get to.  But here’s the amazing thing—it doesn’t seem to bother her.

And not only does that mountain of things to deal with not seem to bother her, (more…)

Stand Again

Just some early morning thoughts from me to you…

“While the storm clouds gather far across the sea,

Let us swear allegiance to a land that’s free,

Let us all be grateful for a land so fair, As we raise our voices in a solemn prayer.”

                                                                                    Irving Berlin

 “You need to be there at 5:30 tonight!”

Her words floated through my thoughts again as I walked out into the crisp, clear and cold morning to place our American flag in its holder on the house.  My daughter-in-law was adamant.  (more…)

Plugged In

Just some early morning thoughts from me to you…

“I am the Gate.  Anyone who goes through me will be cared for—will freely go in and out, and find pasture.  A thief is there to steal and kill and destroy.  I have come so they can have real and eternal life, more and better life than they ever dreamed of.”                                                                                        John 10: 9-10 (The Message)

There they are again.  Those at once encouraging and aspirational words of Christ of more, of a better life than we have ever dreamed of, or as we read in another translation, of an abundant life.

If you’re anything like me, images of what those words mean often come to mind in terms of things, success, accomplishments and other aspects of the American dream that we strive toward achieving and fulfilling.  What does “abundant” look like to us?  What would demonstrate “more” to us?  What does a life that we have always “dreamed of” look like?  (more…)
