Just some early morning thoughts from me to you…

But Ruth replied, “Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Ruth 1: 16 (NIV)

June is that month—a time where weddings occur in abundance. Lynda and I were married in June a number of years ago. And a couple of other dear friends share the same wedding date with us. Another dear friend and his bride were married in Massachusetts yesterday, and a precious little girl whose daddy we knew years before she was born, and actually before he was married to her mom, was also married yesterday. Simply Fathers

Just some early morning thoughts from me to you…

One Father is more than a hundred schoolmasters.”

An Old English Proverb, attributed to George Herbert

It’s clear to me now.

I never made the connection before, other than that the final round of the tournament always fell on Father’s Day. But having the final round of one of the most notable of all the golf tournaments in the world—the United States Open Golf Championship—always to take place on Father’s Day is the most natural of fits and tributes. High and Lifted Up

Just some early morning thoughts from me to you…

In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple. Above it stood seraphim; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew.

And one cried to another and said:

Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory!’…

Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying:

Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?”

Then I said, ‘Here am I! Send me.’”

Isaiah 6: 1-3, 8 (NKJV)

I still can see the day. Even more, I can still feel it as it unfolded before us, but especially as it unfolded for our younger granddaughter, Ellie Kate.

As the scripture above points out, King Uzziah has just died. He had started out on a good path as king, bringing the people of Judah renewed hope, after taking over for previous kings who had led the nation back into idol worship and self-serving behavior. But Uzziah, too, faltered, when he forgot the source of power for all the good that was occurring, and began to believe it was all about him and not about God. (more…)

Life Lines of Legacy

Just some early morning thoughts from me to you…

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless…

For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.”

This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

Ephesians 5: 25-33 (NIV)

The scripture verse above is one particularly appropriate for today—if you’ll allow me a moment of personal reflection. It’s a reminder I have needed at times through the years of life with my bride of now forty-six years on this day. Maybe it will be a moment of reflection for you as well.

Thinking about our upcoming anniversary a few days ago, I don’t remember what led to the moment of reflection. I don’t remember whether we were watching a movie or reading together. We may have been just sitting side-by-side talking, or getting ready to turn in for the night. (more…)
