A New Year—More and Better Life

Just some early morning thoughts from me to you…

A thief is only there to steal and kill and destroy. I came so they can have real and eternal life, more and better life than they ever dreamed of.”

John 10:10 (The Message)

Here we are two days from closing the door on 2013. Perhaps then it is a good time to reflect upon where we’ve been. But even more than that, perhaps we should be reflecting on where we’re going as we approach the first day of 2014, and the new clean, blank, uncluttered, untarnished and unspoiled landscape spreading before each of us upon which to continue the journey of our lives which God has given us.

There was a poignant moment the other day which adds context to these reflections. A dear friend had gone to be with his heavenly father. Those speaking at his memorial service reminded us of all the lives he had touched, and then we paid final respects to him at the cemetery where his earthly body was laid to rest. (more…)

The Most Wonderful Moment

Just some early morning thoughts from me to you…

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An Angel of the Lord appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the Angel said to them, “Do not be afraid I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; He is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Luke 2:8-12 (NIV)

I’m seeing Christmas through my grandchildren in a way I haven’t seen it in years.”

Those were the words of a long-time dear friend a few years ago when I got him on the phone.

It’s wonderful”, he gushed, “just wonderful.” (more…)

Christmas Child

Just some early morning thoughts from me to you…

“O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant,

O come ye, O come ye, to Bethlehem.

Come and behold Him, born the King of angels;

O come, let us adore Him, O come let us adore Him,

O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord.”

The show on television a couple of nights ago was “Monk,” now in syndication around the networks. I had just showered, dressed to turn in for the evening, and lay down on the bed in our room to watch. And then our younger granddaughter, Ellie Kate, burst into the bedroom with her Mimi, saw that “Monk” was on the TV, and jumped onto the bed to watch with me.

Our elder granddaughter Hannah was in the other room also getting ready for bedtime. She and Ellie Kate would share the fold-out couch in the living room of our hotel suite in Tampa. We had just returned from dinner, after attending the annual Christmas performance at Exciting Idlewild Baptist Church in Lutz, Florida. (more…)

We’re so Close. Will We Hit It?

Just some early morning thoughts from me to you…

For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

Isaiah 9:6 (NKJV)

We’re close. And we know it.

You can feel it in everything that’s going on around you. My Granddaughters can feel it, and the radiant expressions on their faces remind all around them who are bathed in their glow. Christmas decorations are going up everywhere you look and as far as one might imagine they’re going up all around the world. The annual conversations, controversies and boycotts about Christmas trees, holiday trees, and greetings of Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays are in full swing. (more…)

Christmas—Magic or Miracle?

Just some early morning thoughts from me to you…

The Angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the Holy One to be born will be called the Son of God.”

Luke 1:35 (NIV)

Read that scripture again. What does it depict to you?

Which is it that you believe? (more…)
