I Don’t Know

Just some early morning thoughts from me to you…

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1:1 (NIV)

We’ve all experienced those types of questions before. You know, the ones you can’t answer or don’t want to think about, so you try to dismiss them with a quick and easy answer. Maybe an answer just acceptable enough to deflect the question so the conversation can move on to something else.

But you can’t dismiss a Grandchild’s question. Oh, I suppose you could for a while, but you really shouldn’t—never, ever. And if the truth be told, the same applies to your child—it’s just that with a Grandchild you’ve been given that second chance to get some things right.

Well, our younger Granddaughter Ellie Kate’s question seemed to come from out of nowhere. We weren’t talking about anything related to what she all-of-a-sudden came up with to ask me. (more…)

Power on Board

Just some early morning thoughts from me to you…

Late that day he said to them, “Let’s go across to the other side.” They took him in the boat as he was. Other boats came along. A huge storm came up. Waves poured into the boat, threatening to sink it. And Jesus was in the stern, head on a pillow, sleeping! They roused him, saying, “Teacher, is it nothing to you that we’re going down?”

Awake now, he told the wind to pipe down and said to the sea, “Quiet! Settle down!” The wind ran out of breath; the sea became smooth as glass. Jesus reprimanded the disciples: “Why are you such cowards? Don’t you have any faith at all?”

They were in absolute awe, staggered. “Who is this, anyway?” they asked. “Wind and sea at his beck and call!”

Mark 4: 35-41 (The Message)

Before that scene on the sea set out above and recorded in the Gospel of Mark, Jesus had been with His apostles for a while. They had heard Him teaching, speaking, confronting the Pharisees and other religious leaders of the day who challenged Him and were afraid of who He was.

And the apostles and many others had seen Him perform miracle after miracle. They had witnessed Him heal a leper on the side of the road, heal the Apostle Peter’s mother-in-law from a fever, and cast out demons (of illness, disease, depression, bad behavior) from many people who came to him asking for His help. They watched as a Roman Centurion came humbly to Him asking Jesus to heal a paralyzed servant. They watched as He raised a widow’s son to life, and listened to Him teach thousands on a hillside and in other settings. (more…)

In the Midst—The Foundation

Just some early morning thoughts from me to you…

I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?”

John 11:25 (NIV)

It’s a simple enough reminder.

This morning began with swirling emotions of personal struggles, along with an awareness of concerns around the nation and world. The noticeably cooler breeze, although slight, provided a moment of encouragement for the hopes and dreams still held for our family, country and world.

Those thoughts and breeze put a spring in my step as I set out to post the American flag and retrieve the morning paper. And then as I walked back up the driveway to the house, with the breeze causing the flag to flap, for just a moment my thoughts and eyes were lifted to a better place.

We need that reminder. A reminder of that better place. (more…)

Just some early morning thoughts from me to you…

But Moses said to the Lord, “Oh, my Lord, I am not eloquent, either in the past or since you have spoken to your servant, but I am slow of speech and of tongue.”

Exodus 4: 10 (ESV)

Ever wonder how many caps you have worn at different times during the course of your life? I’m a baseball coach, among other things, with an extensive collection of hundreds of baseball caps, but that’s not what I am referring to.

What I mean is—how many roles, how many different platforms of impact and influence do you occupy? Father, mother, son, daughter, grandparent, coach, teacher, pastor, friend, employer and employee, and many others. And are you aware of them? Do you recognize the individual importance of each one in your life? Maybe, like Moses in the passage above, you don’t feel adequate to be in that role, standing on that particular platform, to make a difference. (more…)

Relationships—In the Moment

Just some early morning thoughts from me to you…

Afterward Jesus went up on a mountain and called out the ones he wanted to go with him. And they came to him. Then he appointed twelve of them and called them his apostles. They were to accompany him, and he would send them out to preach…”

Mark 3: 13-14 (NLT)

I remember that it was a God-appointed moment that morning a few years ago in a Starbucks on Blake Street in Denver, Colorado. It was a moment for my son and me, with a dear friend who is no longer with us.

What began as a scheduled hour-long meeting, turned into three, making us all late for the rest of the day. All because we were into the moment, into the relationship together—the three of us with each other, together.

Unfortunately, relational moments like that are being lost in today’s fast-paced technological culture with the advent of all forms of social media to connect with others, at least superficially, notwithstanding that it also interrupts most face-to-face moments. (more…)
