The Amazement Remains

Just some early morning thoughts from me to you…

Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; He is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger…When [the shepherds] had seen Him, they spread the word…and all who heard it were amazed…”

Luke 2:11, 12 & 17, 18 (NIV)

A cold front has already blanketed much of our nation, and as we all know will be the case, another one will soon be heading our way. Wrapping paper and ribbon once decorating presents neatly tucked under Christmas trees have made their way to the recycle bins. Decorations and lights are slowly moving toward storage closets for another year.

Christmas day has come-and-gone.

But what about the amazement and joy? (more…)

Forever Tapping—He Never Gives Up

Just some early morning thoughts from me to you…

So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.” Luke 2: 6, 7 (NKJV)

And then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid…For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.” Luke 2: 10-12 (NKJV)

I can say a lot of things about God as I sit here this morning three days from Christmas—but the one thing that stands out among them all is this:

He never gave up on me.

Looking back I can see that I gave up on me—many times. Others through the early years gave up on me also—and shut me out.

But He never did.

Despite the fact that I made absolutely no room in my life for Him for many years—He kept tapping on my life. If the truth be told, I knew that if He was like any of the other adult-like people in my life, I was sure I couldn’t trust Him either. (more…)

Simply Follow the Light

Just some early morning thoughts from me to you…

When [the three wise men] heard the king, they departed; and behold, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, till it came and stood over where the young Child was.

When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy. And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. “

Matthew 2: 9-11(NKJV)

This year just our younger granddaughter, Ellie Kate, will be able to go with us. Keeping the tradition, although slightly modified since our elder granddaughter, Hannah is unable to attend with us this year. Next year Lynda and I hope we will be back on track with both of our precious granddaughters attending the annual Christmas musical with us at Idlewild Baptist Church in Tampa. Florida.

What I am about to describe occurred a few years ago and was one of those unexpected moments of life-changing clarity. (more…)

A Needed Reminder

Just some early morning thoughts from me to you…

And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.  And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear.

And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.

And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.”

Luke 2: 8-12 (ESV)

Well it happened again this past Saturday night. I watched my favorite movie of all time—“It’s a Wonderful Life.”

It happened “unexpectedly,” while I was flipping between “The Preacher’s Wife” with Denzel Washington and the late, Whitney Houston, and the ACC and Big 10 Championship games.

There it was and there it stayed on our television screen. Despite having seen it at least a hundred times and preparing to watch it next week on DVD, I sat there watching it to its glorious eye-moistening end as all of those people whom George Bailey’s life had touched, came to his aid during a time of trouble and need.

The movie never fails to remind me of what God was trying to tell us so many years ago when He sent His Son for you and for me. And it is a reminder I need. It is a reminder that many of us need. (more…)

Bethlehem Morning

Just some early morning thoughts from me to you…

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be on his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”

Isaiah 9: 6 (KJV)

Even if I wanted to wrap myself in the quiet darkness of the early morning, with five windows in my upstairs office the morning’s sunshine has a way of breaking through into the sanctuary I have created with my thoughts. The moments of sitting alone in that darkened corner of my world wondering, planning, a bit anxious about what today and tomorrow will bring are always penetrated by that incessant light.

I wonder if there’s a message there—from long ago—we have yet to learn. (more…)
