American Heroes

Just some early morning thoughts from me to you…

While the storm clouds gather far across the sea, Let us swear allegiance to a land that’s free,

Let us all be grateful for a land so fair, As we raise our voices in a solemn prayer…

God Bless America, Land that I love.

Stand beside her, and guide her, Thru the night with a light from above.

From the mountains, to the prairies,

To the oceans, white with foam…

God bless America, My home sweet home.’”

Irving Berlin

The morning breeze was soft as I posted our American flag in its place of honor and walked on to retrieve the morning paper.

It’s always an emotional day.

Many of us find it hard to talk about and express what we are feeling while emotions pour forth from the past as we reflect on the lives we pause to honor today.

American heroes. God bless America. (more…)

Joy-filled Trust

Just some early morning thoughts from me to you…

Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.” Matthew 5:5 (NIV)

As this newest morning of our lives rises over the horizon, the memory of a long-ago moment remains fresh on my mind, although it many years ago in the making.

Lynda and I were in North Carolina. I was in the midst of dealing with many issues from there, including some business issues involving our larger family circle.

I would have explained my manner and countenance as “focused”, “stoic”, “resolute”, and “determined.” Lynda hit the nail on the head, though, when she stood before me late one afternoon, after a particularly stressful day in dealing with all that was on my plate, and said…

You don’t seem to have any joy in your face anymore.” (more…)

In All Things—Good

Just some early morning thoughts from me to you…

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.”

Romans 8:28 (NIV)

That verse of scripture is one which God has been hitting me over the head with recently. As a result, it has become a foundational promise for all my days. God has seen to that with the heavenly two-by-four He has been lovingly using to get my attention.

As you read and re-read that verse, it will probably become more and more apparent to you—as it did to me—that it is one we should want to claim for perspective and peace in our lives; and one which will provide assurance for every step and moment in our lives. (more…)

Trust—Jump

Just some early morning thoughts from me to you…

And He [Jesus] said: “I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”

Matthew 18: 3 (NIV)

The morning’s breeze has ushered in a few days of what may be the last of the cooler spring-like temperatures for the year. Much different than the oppressive heat of a few weeks ago, and that which the summer will bring, reminding me of that of a few years ago which provided the backdrop for this scene of ever-present and total trust.

Standing at the edge of the pool, our youngest Granddaughter, Ellie Kate, time after time, wide-eyed and smiling, would issue fair warning to me with the words “Granddaddy, here I come!” Then leaning head-long into a graceful belly-flop she would break the surface of the water not too far from my awaiting arms. Deep-end, shallow-end—it didn’t matter; because she knew I was there. She was coming! (more…)
