God’s Agenda—It’s What Life is About

Just some early morning thoughts from me to you…

So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.”

Matthew 7:12 (ESV)

Then those ‘sheep’ are going to say, ‘Master, what are you talking about? When did we ever see you hungry and feed you, thirsty and give you a drink? And when did we ever see you sick or in prison and come to you?’ Then the King will say, ‘I’m telling the solemn truth: Whenever you did one of these things to someone overlooked or ignored, that was me—you did it to me.’”

Matthew 25: 37-40 (The Message)

As most of us who have been awake for the last few days know, Pope Francis just completed an historic visit to the United States of America. And even in the midst of the spiritual impact of the occasion, there was the usual analyses of his agenda regarding what he said and what it meant—usually in the context of political overtones.

Whether we realize or not, or want to admit it or not, our tendency as human beings is to usually attribute some hidden agenda to the words we hear or read. (more…)

When We All Can Say—“I Good!”

Just some early morning thoughts from me to you…

God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.

So we will not fear when earthquakes come and the mountains crumble into the sea.

Let the oceans roar and foam.

Let the mountains tremble as the waters surge!…

Be still, and know that I am God!

I will be honored by every nation.

I will be honored throughout the world.”

Psalm 46: 1-3, 10 (NLT)

I don’t know about you, but for some time after the tragic events of September 11, 2001, I found myself having difficulty remembering times before that day and date.

It seems that day has become a benchmark in history for many of our lives, and that is unfortunate, because of the tragedy and grief we will forever hold in our hearts.

But to a degree it is also fortunate, because it was a day where through all the numbness, sense of loss, anger, heartache and pain, we realized anew that “God is [our] refuge and strength” and has and continues to hold us in His arms.

Even though I had no reason to believe they were in trouble, I still called my children that day. Lynda and I both needed to hear their voices, to reconnect with them at that time. I’m sure many of you felt the same way. (more…)

Time to Remember and Rise Again

Just some early morning thoughts from me to you…

This is a time for American heroes. We will do what is hard. We will achieve what is great. This is a time for American heroes, and we reach for the stars.” (The West Wing)

It’s almost as if the morning sunshine knows it has been lighting the way during an important week. A week we should all remember. A few days ago many of us stopped to remember the worst attack on the United States in our history and the thousands of lives which were lost.

I wonder how many this week will continue to pause to remember.

Those recent remembrances of that tragic day on September 11, 2001 seem to be different than those which occurred in the days and early years which followed the attacks of 9/11. News accounts this past week were sparse and lean—unlike the number and content of those delivered nearer in time to that horrific day. (more…)

So, What Do You Think?

Just some early morning thoughts from me to you…

What I always feared has happened to me. What I dreaded has come true.” Job 3: 25 (NLT)

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

Philippians 4: 13 (NKJV)

So what’s your record today?

In whatever that you think is important enough to keep a record.

What do you think the rest of the week will look like for you?

Here’s what I would share with you about that second question, to keep you from dwelling on the answer to it for too long—I don’t know and you don’t know. And the only way to know for sure is to go ahead and play the week out. (more…)
