Simply Follow the Light

Just some early morning thoughts from me to you…

When [the three wise men] heard the king, they departed; and behold, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, till it came and stood over where the young Child was.

When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy.

And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. “

Matthew 2: 9-11 (NKJV)

This year just our younger granddaughter, Ellie Kate, was able to go with us. Keeping the tradition, usually with both of our precious granddaughters, last weekend we attended the annual Christmas musical presentation at Idlewild Baptist Church in Tampa, Florida. This was the ninth year in a row we were able to attend,

What I am about to share occurred during the first pageant we attended together, and became one of those unexpected moments of life-changing clarity. (more…)

A Needed Reminder, Again

Just some early morning thoughts from me to you…

And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear.

And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.

And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.”

Luke 2: 8-12 (ESV)

Well it happened again a few days ago. I watched my favorite movie of all time—“It’s a Wonderful Life.”

Despite having seen it at least a hundred times and preparing to watch it this week on DVD, I sat there watching it to its glorious eye-moistening end as all of those people whom George Bailey’s life had touched came to his aid during a time of trouble and need.

The movie never fails to remind me of what God was trying to tell us so many years ago when He sent His Son for you and for me. And it is a reminder I need. It is a reminder that many of us need. (more…)

Make Room

Just some early morning thoughts from me to you…

While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.”

Luke 2: 6-7 (NIV)

We made room for them that day a few years ago. We always will.

Lynda announced that our two precious Granddaughters were coming to spend the day with us while their Mom and Dad went Christmas shopping. Now they could finish hanging ornaments on the Christmas tree which they had helped me pick out for our home a few days earlier, and they could help us decorate the house. In particular, they could place a few more manger scenes wherever they felt they should be. The timing of their visit was perfect—as time with them always is—but, as I was about to discover, for much more than the obvious.

After they had been there awhile, I noticed that Hannah and Ellie Kate had placed one of the manger scenes directly under the Christmas tree—where we usually put the presents. And so when they were both together, a little while later, I drew upon my best Granddaddy wisdom, and asked why they had put that manger set under the tree adding the point that since we usually put presents under the tree “…there would be less room now under the tree for the presents!” (more…)

Where Are We Heading?

Just some early morning thoughts from me to you…

And it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This census first took place while Quirinius was governing Syria. So all went to be registered, everyone to his own city.

Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child.”

Luke 2: 1-5 (NKJV)

The tradition continues in our home.

Each year at this particular time of the year, our family knows where we are headed.

Every year of our marriage of forty-nine years, we have gone out to secure a real Christmas tree, even during the onset in popularity, convenience and beauty of the artificial trees of every shape and size. And ever since they were old enough to go with us, our Granddaughters have assisted in the selection process. (more…)
