Worthy of Their Lives?

Just some early morning thoughts from me to you…

While the storm clouds gather far across the sea, Let us swear allegiance to a land that’s free,

Let us all be grateful for a land so fair, As we raise our voices in a solemn prayer…

God Bless America, Land that I love.

Stand beside her, and guide her, Thru the night with a light from above.

From the mountains, to the prairies, to the oceans, white with foam…

God bless America, My home sweet home.’” Irving Berlin

The morning breeze was soft and cool as I posted our American flag in its place of honor and walked on to retrieve the morning paper.

Today is always an emotional day.

Many of us find it hard to talk about and express what we are feeling while emotions pour forth from the past as we reflect on the lives we pause to honor today.

American heroes. God bless America.

Are we worthy of what they did for you and for me?

As we sit here this morning in peace eating breakfast, we give thanks for the lives of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. We pray that on this Memorial Day and every day, we would never forget the sacrifice of their lives given so that we might live today in the security and peace we enjoy. (more…)

Cheerful Endurance

Just some early morning thoughts from me to you…

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles.

And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

Hebrews 12: 1-3 (NLT)

It’s a great place to start life, and a great reminder for step-after-step of the journey of each day of our lives, when the Apostle Paul makes the bold all-encompassing statement recorded in Romans 8:28—

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those

who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.” (more…)

Running Lean

Just some early morning thoughts from me to you…

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles.

And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

Hebrews 12: 1-3 (NLT)

Here’s the deal—we live in a world where there is pain, heartache, sickness, sorrow, loss, pressure, expectations, hardships, and even death. That’s the setting, the arena, which the writer of Hebrews is remembering when he writes this section of the book of Hebrews showing us how to grow in our faith and trust more in Christ.

That’s our world. But we need to remember— as followers of His—we run the race against all those things which confront us with Him and with His power. A huge difference than without Him. We don’t go it alone. Is it easy? No, but we have His power and His example and all those others cheering us on in that great cloud of witnesses.

And further, the writer says that to be able to do it well, we have to “throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles,” as part of our preparation to run this race and grow in our faith. To get rid of excess weight, “mass” or “bulk,” and to put away any sin that will trip us up. (more…)

Fix Your Focus—Fix Your Life

In any given college season—football, baseball, basketball, lacrosse, softball, gymnastics and many other college sports—well over 120 Division I schools and hundreds more in other divisions, begin the year with a focus on being the last one standing with the national championship trophy.

And if that were the end-all-be-all—most everyone would end the year as failures. Is that really what happens? And if the truth be known, as you and I have seen, for some it is the end-all-be-all. It depends on your focus. (more…)

Short Wicks

Just some early morning thoughts from me to you…

Promise me you’ll always remember: You’re braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.”

Christopher Robin to Winnie the Pooh

I wonder how peaceful our sleep would be if we took those words to heart before we went to bed each night after the events of the day bounced us around a bit.

I wonder how our days would go if we embraced those words of Christopher Robin for our lives as we put on our shoes and stepped out into whatever was before us into the sunshine of a brand new day.

Things we go through, things we see happening around us, remind us that the life we have been given to embrace and live here on earth is short. Things happen, people come in and go out of our lives—and we are reminded once again that we’re not promised tomorrow.

One time around in this life God has given us. We have been given one day at a time to live to the fullest and to make the most of—or not. We have been given the gift of the lives of loved ones that have blessed our lives, and would leave a huge hole in our lives were they gone. (more…)
